I’ve been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 a lot. I completed a mission last night called The Ties That Bind Us. It was the continuation of a story following two guys I helped escape from a prison chain gang. The black guy is named White and the white guy is named Black. They are always arguing and threatening to kill the other, but they’ve yet to go their separate ways. The latest mission was simple. They’re sick and I had to get them medicine. They both said I should give it to the other, even though they never miss an opportunity to denigrate the other.
The reason I mention this is because they remind me of two men we used to run into. Every Friday morning we would go to McDonald’s for breakfast, and there would be two old men there. The black guy would sit at a table in the middle of the floor reading the newspaper and drinking coffee. The white guy would sit in the corner booth by the door. They never sat together, but they would occasionally glance up. Every Friday, this would continue until they locked eyes and started talking. If that didn’t work, one of them would make a random comment, louder than necessary. “It’s gonna be hard mowing that wet grass today!” The other would respond and they would still be talking when we left. They still didn’t sit together.
Yesterday’s run was 5.03 miles/11:10 pace.
